Article - Brazil Best Place to Invest Among BRICs

Oct. 30 (Bloomberg) - Brazil is the best place to invest among the larger emerging markets because of rising demand for commodities while the U.S. should be avoided because of the prospect of a “double-dip” recession, said John Mauldin, president of Millennium Wave Advisors LLC.

Domestic demand in Latin America’s largest economy and faster economic growth in emerging markets, especially the BRIC nations that include Russia, India and China, will push up commodity prices, Mauldin said in an interview in Sao Paulo. Millennium Wave, based in Arlington, Texas, advises hedge funds.

News - Brazil state bank frees up billions for Cup stadia

Brazil’s state development bank BNDES said it will provide up to 4.8 billion reais (US$2.77 billion) for work on the 12 stadia that will stage matches in the 2014 World Cup, despite a promise from organisers that public funds would only be needed for infrastructure.

The credit line will have a ceiling of 400 million reais per stadium, limited to 75 percent of the total cost of the projects, the BNDES said in a statement after a meeting between President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and ministers linked to Brazil’s staging of the tournament.

SAO PAULO (Reuters) - Once marked by turbulence, Brazil’s now-healthy finances may be both the envy of the rich world and a source of future troubles.

Latin America’s largest economy has deflected the worst of the financial crisis that has left the major industrialized countries buried deeper in debt.

Yet Brazil’s privileged fiscal position brings risks: a flood of foreign money that could overheat the economy and the potential for fiscal slippage during the 2010 elections.

Brazil’s net public sector debt-to-GDP ratio rose to about 44 percent in August, up from about 36 percent at the end of 2008, according to the central bank.
