According to Ceará’s SETUR (Ceará State’s Secretary of Tourism), the Brazilian northeastern state should receive up to 720.000 tourists during the high season (which lasts from December to February), an 9,4% increase in touristic demand compared to last year figures. Tourism in the high season should generate R$ 907,2 millions in revenues and hotel ocupation rate should reach 73,3% in the state’s capital Fortaleza. Also according to the same source, 88% of the touristic flux comes from Brazil and Ceará now occupies the third national place in tourism revenue and the sixth in tourist flux.

Amongst diverse tourism promotion investments, Ceará is investing R $ 960 thousand in divulgation in national newspapers to promote “o destino Ceará” (Ceará touristic destination) and more than R$ 180 million in roads improvement. Other structural investments include the regeneration of Fortaleza’s center, an exposition center, and an oceanarium.

Another side of the state’s tourism strategy relates to a change in the tourist qualification, abandoning the charter flights model to favour regular flights with international tourist who are more serious and more qualified. The launch of the Atlanta-Fortaleza Delta Air Lines flight on December 22, should set the standart for this strategy, by targeting the high-income retired North-American. The expectation is that 20% more tourists visit the state by the end of 2009 of which 50% will be North-Americans.
