Delta Airlines, the world’s largest airline company, is set to launch its Fortaleza-Miami airline on December 22, as a result of an agreement reached on June 26 by the US and Brazil on the liberalization of air routes between the two countries. This agreement reduces restrictions on U.S.-Brazil flight services and will provide for an increase of 50% in the number of flights. As a result of this agreement any number of U.S. or Brazilian airlines may now serve the market. Under the new accord, U.S. and Brazilian carriers for the first time will be able to provide some services on a code-share basis with their third-country partner airlines. Most importantly this agreement allows U.S. carriers to serve five new cities in Brazil: Fortaleza, Belo Horizonte, Salvador, Recife and Manaús.
On August 8, the US Department of Transportation authorized Delta to operate on Brazil from November onwards. Starting on December 22, Delta Airlines will operate 4 direct flights (on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays) linking Fortaleza to one of the world’s biggest airport, Atlanta. The flights should take 6 hours and 15 minutes, each way and should cost around US$ 599 for the Fortaleza-Atlanta roundtrip.
This new airline is expected to support growth not only in leizure tourism in Ceará, but also in business tourism - a tourist who is likelly to have higher income -, as foreign entrepreneurs will be more likely to come to Ceará for conventions and expositions. Also, increased accessibility will likely make Ceará a more viable second-home option for North Americans, more investors will travel, and the increased visitor numbers will also fuel demand for hotel beds and short-term rentals. Fortaleza is also likely to a headquarters-city in the 2014 World Cup, implying both further Federal State investment and international visibility.
