Amazonia: Your next travel destination?

Most people spend a day or so in Manaus before heading into the rain forest. Stay downtown so you can walk to attractions, restaurants and the Rio Negro. Hotels to consider include:

Manaus Saint Paul, a few streets from the Amazon Theatre, with semi-swank rooms with modern furnishings and kitchenettes. Rates about $100.

• The Taj Mahal Continental Hotel, feels a bit dated (slightly gaudy 1970s). Doubles from about $150.

• About a half-hour from the city in beachy Ponta Negra, the Tropical Manaus, is an adventure unto itself, with an on-site zoo of rescued animals, an orchid garden, a tree-climbing circuit, a shopping gallery and more. Rates from $200.

Amazon adventures

A variety of travel operators and properties organize Amazon packages, which usually include accommodations at a river lodge, meals, transportation and excursions, such as fishing for piranhas, scouting for pink dolphins and caimans, hiking in the rain forest and visiting a village.

• One of the more popular resorts is the Ariau Amazon Towers, 35 miles from Manaus. Built at canopy level at the foot of the Anavilhanas Archipelago, the hotel features 70-foot catwalks between buildings and the Aviary of Hope, a wildlife-rehabilitation program. A three-night, all-inclusive package costs $714 per person double; other options available.

• For seclusion and simplicity, we chose Amazon Tupana Lodge, a half-day bus-and-boat ride from Manaus. The 10 rooms are unadorned yet homey, with individual porches and hammocks and private showers (albeit cold). We booked through local tour company Amazonas by Viverde, which arranged the three-night package (about $400).
