The success of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil after won its bid for the 2016 Olympic Games, has an important significance beyond of the sport for being the first time that a South American country, a sub continent known as part of Third World, was chosen as host the most important competition sport of the planet, which it has been a privilege of the named “rich countries” since this competition was created.

This decision opens the possibility for that Brazil not be longer a country of the Third World, because since many years ago this country have showed a big industrial and commercial development, in addition the tourism as a strong attraction and recently as an emerging oil nation after the discoveries of oilfield with potential of 80 billions of barrels of oil.

Article - The thrill of Brazil: How Rio is already in its stride ahead of hosting the 2016 Olympics

No one throws a party like Rio de Janeiro. And, having just won the race to host the 2016 Olympics, South America’s carnival-loving capital of extravagance has cause to celebrate.

The news follows the city’s successful bid for the 2014 soccer World Cup, and will mean not only a massive boost to tourism, but a huge - and sustained - increase in government spending.

This should result in improvements to infrastructure and services. One knock-on effect will be an increase in property values; another, modelled on Beijing, will be a smartening up of the city, with crackdowns on crime and the removal of the favela slums.

Article - Brazil is the 21st-century power to watch

When I appeared on a panel of journalists from international publications recently, the moderator asked us to nominate our big story for the next year.

One of the panellists suggested the UK parliamentary elections. A second mentioned the continued ramifications of the financial crisis. I said Brazil, which I was about to visit for the first time.

Consider, I said: Brazil had come through the financial crisis in reasonable shape. It was sitting on a vast deep-sea oil find. It had just seen the world’s biggest stock market listing this year - the $8bn flotation of part of the Brazilian arm of Santander. It would also be host to the world’s two biggest sporting events: the 2014 football World Cup and the 2016 Olympic Games - which Rio de Janeiro had won this month over Tokyo, Madrid and Chicago.

News - Olympics Give Brazil ‘Shot in the Arm,’ World Bank’s Cox Says

Oct. 4 (Bloomberg) - The 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro will give Brazil’s economy a “shot in the arm” as it leads other Latin American countries out of the crisis, said Pamela Cox, the World Bank’s vice president for the region.

“Ever since Rio lost the capital to Brasilia in 1960, we’ve seen a shifting out” of business, investment and government, said Cox in an interview yesterday. “We’re very hopeful this will help the city reinvent itself.”

News - Brazil Stocks, Real Rally After Rio Wins 2016 Olympics Bid

Oct. 2 (Bloomberg) — Brazilian stocks rallied, making the Bovespa the world’s best-performing major index today, and the currency gained after Rio de Janeiro was awarded the 2016 Summer Olympic Games, luring investment to the country.

The Bovespa climbed 0.8 percent to 60,944.33 at 1:08 p.m. New York time, led by airlines Tam SA and Gol Linhas Aereas Inteligentes SA. The real, the best-performing emerging-market currency against the dollar this year, rose 0.5 percent to 1.7778. Yields on interest-rate futures contracts declined.
